Australian-born and bred, Hayes worked as a lecturer in fine art before moving into the surfing industry, where he served as head designer for Rip Curl. He then relocated to Hong Kong to take up the position of Product and Sourcing Director for Quiksilver. That cultural shift between Australia and Hong Kong is at the heart of the Australese exhibition, a title Hayes describes as a mix of Australia, Hongkongese and Chinese.
